How many times have you asked, “How was your day?” Just to get a generic response, “fine” or “good”. Being a good parent you follow-up with “What did you do today?” And then get “nothing” as the answer. It can be very frustrating asking questions that elicit only a one-word response.

So, today when your little one comes home try to ask about things that are specific, but still open-ended. Make this school year the one that we move beyond “fine” and “nothing” by asking your child to describe his world. Try one of these conversation-starters – it’s a wonderful way to connect with your child.

  • Tell me about the best part of your day.
  • Tell me one kind thing you did today?
  • Did any of your classmates do anything funny?
  • Tell me about a lesson you did today.
  • Who did you play with today?
  • What do you think of your teacher(s)?
  • Who did you sit with at lunch today?
  • What lessons are you going to try tomorrow?
  • Can you tell me the name of one new friend you met today?
  • Can you tell me the names of all the teachers you know?
