The holiday season is here, and it is a time full of meaning and magic for children. With the fun holiday season, there are many opportunities to find learning endeavors for children. To keep your children busy with fun and learning over the holidays, here are some activities for you to try together!
Greeting Cards & Thank You Notes
Cover the basic requirements for writing, reading, grammar, and punctuation with holiday greeting cards and thank you notes. You and your child can either create the cards or print out ones yourselves! The holiday season is also a time where many children receive gifts, therefore teaching them to write out thank you notes is beneficial to their development as well.
Holiday Books & Stories
From classics like “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” by Dr. Seuss, or “The Miracle of Hanukkah” by Seymour Chwast there are many books to expand vocabulary and creative thinking for your children! There are books on a variety of topics, from interfaith books to books that are about winter and snow. You and your children will have so many books to choose from to help celebrate a variety of cultures and the wintertime in general!
Holiday Baking and Building a Gingerbread House
If you want to get your children excited about math and geometry, have them help you with baking or building a gingerbread house. When it comes to baking, your children will learn about the importance of measurements, proportions, and understanding following instructions and lists. When it comes to building a gingerbread house, your students are deciding how to fit together the squares, rectangles, triangles, and other parts needed for the structure. Baking is a great way to keep your children’s math development growing and best of all – there are many yummy treats to eat afterward!
Creating Holiday Art
One of the most magical parts of the holidays is watching your home transform with decorations. With tutorials on how to build snow globes, sugar creatures, and other fun DIY holiday crafts, the possibilities are endless for your holiday creations. Allowing your child to express their creativity around this time of year leads to many memories and the joy that comes with showcasing their work for visiting family members.
Learn About Winter
Take this wintery season to teach your child about why it is winter, discussing how the earth moves and the winter solstice. This is a great time for children to learn about snow and snowflakes. You can demonstrate your child’s creativity with a paper snowflake table runner and other winter solstice activities.
