Norbeck Montessori is a private school in Rockville, MD that was established in 1975 by Elizabeth Bissett. The dream of Norbeck Montessori started as a small one classroom concept with approximately 20 children. It has since grown into a large 5-classroom facility with the capacity to teach up to 118 children. We offer Transitional Two’s, Primary Preschool, and Kindergarten programs for children ages 24 months – 6 years. Norbeck is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.
We believe children are the most adept at developing a love to learn during the preschool years. It is this critical learning period that children possess the greatest ability to learn more than any other period in their lives. That’s why finding the right program is quite possibly one of the most important decisions you’ll ever make as parents. We foster that learning period to its fullest.
Norbeck Montessori offers:
- Lovable, safe, comfortable classrooms
- Full range of Montessori learning materials
- Promotes friendship, kindness, respect, and independence
- Low student-teacher ratio
- Individual and small-group instruction
- Collaborative learning approach in multi-aged classrooms
- Develops children into life-long learners
The state of Maryland recognizes Norbeck Montessori as a private Montessori school. The instructional program of Norbeck Montessori is fully accredited by the Maryland State Board of Education and the child care program is licensed by the Maryland Office of Child Care.
At Norbeck Montessori, we focus on fostering the whole child is at the core of what we do. We encourage each child’s unique potential, at his or her pace, while surrounded by a warm, loving environment. Our mission is to educate, enrich, and encourage children to reach their fullest potential as curious, independent, socially responsible, kind, happy individuals. These early learning years are the most critical time to inspire a lifelong love of learning in a safe and caring environment. By encouraging parent involvement, facilitating ongoing professional development for our staff, and creating socially responsible global citizens, our students continue to thrive in the classroom and beyond.
It is the most fundamental teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori that Norbeck Montessori is building upon. Drawing on the natural and spontaneous curiosity that children possess, the children at Norbeck Montessori are always learning and applying skills and concepts from the world around them. We know children learn best through "hands-on" experience. By participating in the actual lessons and understanding them, the Montessori child develops an ability to problem solve, investigate and question. With our mixed age classrooms, children can reinforce what they know by sharing their knowledge with their younger classmates. Using this methodology, your child develops a positive self-image as well as respect for themselves and those around them.
Elizabeth Bissett (Liz) was born and raised in the Washington D.C. area. Liz always loved working with children, and after graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School she went on to attend the Washington Montessori Institute and obtained her Primary Montessori Certificate. In 1975 Liz opened Norbeck Montessori with a single classroom and grew the school to the campus that it is today.
Today, Norbeck Montessori is still family owned and operated; Liz’s daughter-in-law, Tara Bissett has followed in Liz’s footsteps. Tara shares Liz’s passion for working with children, she obtained her Primary Montessori Certificate from the American Montessori Society (AMS) and is now the Director and Head of School.
Liz’s original vision and determination still inspire our passion, our mission, and our commitment to children today. The possibilities are infinite as we continue to lay the foundation for a lifetime of educational success.
